Culloden Battlefield.
Culloden Moor. The last pitched battle on British soil was to see 1,000 Highlanders lost for about 50 English casualties, in conditions
that did not suit their fighting strengths.

|
Harried by accurate and sustained artillery fire, tired after a long night
of marching, the Highlanders succumbed on that bloody April day in 1746.
"And the hopes of their Prince died with them." |
The Highlanders were outnumbered 5,000 against Cumberland's 9,000, and were destined to die in
disproportionate numbers, more than 1,000 against Cumberland's 364. They were ill-equipped, their artillery poor, their cavalry few. They
were exhausted, having marched all night on an abortive foray, they were hungry, due to the fact that their food supply was left behind
in Inverness.
Required to fight over ground which suited Cumberland's cannon and cavalry, their main tactic "The Charge" was handicapped.
Yet they went into battle with a courage which has passed into a legend, today Scots the world over still salute. |
